A Brief History of Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort Lauderdale Beach began taking shape as a vacation destination during the early 20th century, when hotels, restaurants and recreational attractions began appearing along the Atlantic shoreline. Much of the island’s early history is connected to Hugh Taylor Birch, a Chicago attorney who acquired extensive beachfront property and later donated land that would become one of the city’s most treasured public parks.

The beach gained national fame during the 1960s, particularly following the release of the movie Where the Boys Are, which helped establish Fort Lauderdale as a major Spring Break destination. After decades of attracting college crowds, the city began transforming its beachfront in the late 1980s and 1990s, creating the palm-lined promenade and encouraging the development of upscale hotels, restaurants and residential properties.

Historic Beach Hangouts: Two longtime establishments preserve a connection to the beach’s colorful past. The legendary Elbo Room, established in 1938 at Las Olas Boulevard and A1A, remains a popular spot for live music and people-watching. Farther north, The World Famous Parrot Lounge, established in 1970 near Sunrise Boulevard, is a neighborhood institution known for its casual atmosphere and sports bar vibe.

Las Olas Oceanside Park and The LOOP

Located directly across from the beach at the eastern end of Las Olas Boulevard, Las Olas Oceanside Park is a central gathering place for outdoor recreation, community activities and entertainment. The park features an open lawn, playground and interactive water feature, with restaurants, shops and the beachfront promenade just steps away.

The park anchors The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Parks), a collection of public spaces that includes nearby D.C. Alexander Park, Sunset Terrace and the Intracoastal Promenade. Together, these venues host outdoor concerts, fitness classes, festivals, movies and seasonal community celebrations.

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens

Tucked between beachfront hotels and condominium towers near Sunrise Boulevard, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens preserves an extraordinary piece of old Fort Lauderdale. The estate dates to 1919, when Hugh Taylor Birch gifted the property to his daughter Helen and her husband, artist Frederic Clay Bartlett.

Today, the historic home showcases original artwork, distinctive architecture and furnishings surrounded by lush tropical gardens. The property also protects native coastal habitats that offer a glimpse of what the barrier island looked like before extensive development. Guided tours, exhibitions and special events make Bonnet House one of Fort Lauderdale’s most important cultural attractions.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Often described as Fort Lauderdale’s Central Park, Hugh Taylor Birch State Park encompasses approximately 180 acres between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The park preserves native maritime forests, coastal dunes and freshwater habitats, providing a peaceful natural setting just steps from the busy beachfront.

Visitors can explore walking and biking trails, picnic beneath the trees, observe wildlife or paddle along the park’s scenic coastal dune lake. Kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and bicycles are available for rent, making it easy to enjoy the park without bringing your own equipment.

The Grove, located near the park’s beach entrance, features an open-air restaurant and bar, equipment rentals and live music. Its relaxed setting makes it a popular stop after a morning of hiking, kayaking or enjoying the beach. Learn more at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park.

Restaurants, Shopping and Waterfront Entertainment

Bo’s Beach is a popular beachfront bar and restaurant near the Bahia Mar Marina

Fort Lauderdale Beach offers a lively mix of oceanfront restaurants, casual cafés, upscale dining and neighborhood bars. The area around Las Olas Boulevard and A1A is especially popular, with beachfront dining, the open-air Beach Place shopping and entertainment complex, and easy access to the promenade. Farther north, North Beach Village offers boutique hotels, restaurants and a quieter neighborhood atmosphere.

On the Intracoastal side of the island, Marina Village at Bahia Mar brings a new dimension to waterfront entertainment, featuring outdoor dining, food vendors, bars and gathering spaces overlooking the marina. One of its most unusual attractions is The Shorely, a former ferry transformed into a floating cocktail lounge and entertainment venue.

The southern waterfront is also home to the iconic Pier Sixty-Six Resort and Marina, which has undergone an extensive redevelopment. The restored resort features waterfront restaurants, lounges and a world-class deepwater marina accommodating some of the largest yachts visiting Fort Lauderdale. The landmark’s distinctive tower and Pier Top lounge remain an important part of the city’s architectural history.

Fort Lauderdale has a long history as a center for competitive swimming and diving. The International Swimming Hall of Fame, established on the beachfront in 1965, celebrates the achievements of aquatic athletes from around the world. Its neighboring Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex has undergone a major renovation, featuring modern competition pools and a dramatic 27-meter diving tower.

The surrounding peninsula is being transformed into The Water District, an ambitious waterfront redevelopment planned to include a redesigned Swimming Hall of Fame museum, marine aquarium exhibits, restaurants, public gathering spaces and cultural attractions. The project is intended to further enhance the southern beachfront as a destination for aquatic sports, education and waterfront recreation.

Annual Events and Festivals

Fort Lauderdale Beach hosts several major annual events that attract visitors from around the world. Each fall, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) transforms the area’s marinas and waterways into the world’s largest in-water boat show, showcasing everything from recreational boats to luxury superyachts. With major exhibition sites at Bahia Mar, Las Olas Marina and Pier Sixty-Six, the event celebrates Fort Lauderdale’s reputation as the Yachting Capital of the World.

Tortuga also promotes marine conservation, combining live entertainment with support for ocean-related environmental initiatives.

During the holiday season, the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade brings illuminated yachts and decorated boats to Fort Lauderdale’s waterways. Known as the Greatest Show on H₂O, the annual parade travels along the New River and Intracoastal Waterway, with spectacular views from waterfront restaurants, residences and designated viewing areas along the route.

Fort Lauderdale Beach Real Estate and New Construction Opportunities

Fort Lauderdale Beach offers a diverse selection of residential properties, from established oceanfront condominiums and boutique buildings to luxury waterfront estates and new high-rise residences. The barrier island’s limited land availability, combined with its beaches, restaurants, parks and boating amenities, continues to attract buyers seeking a coastal lifestyle.

Three particularly notable waterfront developments are helping reshape the southern end of Fort Lauderdale:

  • Pier Sixty-Six Residences: Part of the extensively redeveloped Pier Sixty-Six resort and marina, these luxury residences combine Intracoastal views, waterfront amenities and access to one of Fort Lauderdale’s premier yachting destinations. The completed residential buildings offer an alternative to traditional oceanfront living, while additional mixed-use residential development is proposed for the surrounding property.
  • St. Regis Resort & Residences Bahia Mar: This major pre-construction project is planned for the Bahia Mar waterfront, between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The development envisions luxury private residences, a St. Regis hotel, a world-class marina, beach club and extensive resort amenities. Its location near the beach, Las Olas Boulevard and the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex makes it one of the area’s most significant upcoming residential developments.
  • Selene Oceanfront Residences: The twin 300 foot towers of this luxury condominium are the tallest on the beach, showcasing unparalleled panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, and city views of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Selene’s contemporary architecture, spacious residences with expansive private terraces, and a host of indoor and outdoor resort-style amenities all come together to offer a lifestyle of genuinely relaxed elegance.

Buyers can also explore established condominium communities throughout the island, including oceanfront towers, Intracoastal buildings and smaller boutique residences. For buyers interested in boating, the southern barrier island and nearby Harbor Beach neighborhood offer luxury waterfront homes with private docks and convenient access to Port Everglades.
